A paper device co-constructed by community residents was selected for the 2018 Beijing Design Week “Leisure Time” public art exhibition
Aggregation of Lines and surfaces in a digital matrix triggers the participants’ understanding of the passage of time. The surface rotates over time, and the path in the labyrinth changes. Participants enter the drifting labyrinth freely, to complete the path finding task within the time.
4天在职时间，从看场地选房间到展厅开放; 2小时选购物料，8-16小时的物料加工与运输; 16小时，4个人，从现场放线，现场装配与安装; 80根不锈钢棒，40米鱼线，40片纸屏; 一同创造出的为期两周，老少兼宜的社区乐园。
Four days of working day time, from site visit to the opening of the exhibition room; Two hours of materials selection, and 8 to16 hours of material processing and transportation;16 hours of from site preparation, to on site assembling and installation by 4 residents; 80 stainless steel bars, 40 meters fish lines and 40 paper screens; all above together created a two-weeks treasure finding wonderland for the local community of both young and old.
9月下旬的某个周日凌晨得到通知，西山的展区照常进行。此时距离北京设计周西山片区“闲暇时光”公共艺术展开幕还有不到4天时间。而作为可能参展的建筑师, 还没有关于展厅的任何信息。唯一得知的是此次艺术介入的展区地址, 位于北京西山模式口大街。
On a very early Sunday morning in late September, I was noticed that the exhibition in West Mountain would be still carried out as scheduled. At that time, there was only less than four days before the grand opening of the ‘leisure time’ public art exhibition within Beijing Design Week. As an architect candidate might to join the exhibition, I hadn’t have any specific information about the venue. The only thing known is the location about this art intervention, that each artist will be given a street front space along Moshikou Ave. in West Mountain area.
模式口大街是一条东西走向的龙形街道，全长近1.5公里，寺庙古刹分布其北。这里曾是京西古镇通往京城输送煤炭的驼运要道，被称为驼岭古道，是老舍先生笔下《骆驼祥子》的历史参照。 伴随着城市能源供给的现代化进程，街道上驼消铃散， 随后迁徙至此的制造业工人生息蔓延，街道两侧社区呈现自然生长的居住态势。
Moshikou Ave. is an east-west dragon-shaped street with a total length of nearly 1.5 kilometers. It used to be the main path of the camel transportation that connects the ancient coal town west to the capital then to the forbidden city, so it was also called the ancient camel ridge and was the historical reference of the famous Chinese novelist Mr. Lao She’s “Camel Xiangzi”. Along with the modernization process of energizing to the city, the camels disappeared. Then the manufacturing workers who migrated here spread their lives in the neighborhood. Communities grow and shape themselves spontaneously along the street.
对于这样一条远离市区却脉迹深厚老街的修复，人们希望恢复老街的历史风貌与文化特色, 提升文旅为主线的街区商业 价值，让脉迹延续的同时为周边社区带入新的活力。而对于这样的一个失而复得的场地，如何能快速营造出一个能让当地居民与来访者共同参与的，互动性强的休闲场所，是希望通过这次城市艺术快闪项目尝试的。纸的轻盈易得，与街区厚重的历史印记对比; 随时间变化的面集限定引发参与者对于时间流逝的再认识。摈弃过于精致的展示性装置，被纸屏矩阵充盈的空间本身是一个最大化可能性的介入式装置。对此，在快速判断了方案可能性与搭建成本后，在天亮之前给了主办方肯定的答复。
For the restoration of such an old but historical street far from downtown, people hope to bring up its vitality through commercial activities rooted in local culture resources. While for such a restored venue, the willing through this urban flash art intervention as an architect is to create a vivid leisure place that draws attention from local community and visitors through rapid fabrication and construction. Paper is light and easily available, to compare with the heavy historical imprint of the street; Matrix changed over time triggering the participants’ understanding of the passage of time. Instead of sophisticated installation, the space fulfilled with the paper screen matrix itself is an intrusive device with maximum possibility. After quickly judging the possibility of the project and the cost, I accepted the invitation before the dawn.
而您接下来将看到的，是一次完全由当地的社区居民利用闲暇时光手工搭建起的纸装置项目: 漂移迷宫, 一个展出长达两周的社区乐园。
What you will see next is a paper space installation built manually and entirely by local community residents in their leisure time: Drifting Labyrinth, a community wonderland existed for two weeks.
Components are hanging down from the ceiling at the same level，which size, weight and arrangement considers the flying and drifting of the paper screen when people walk through quickly uninterrupted.
Shaped holes left the participators windows to see and to be seen. The exhibition coincides with the long holiday of National Days and Mid-Autumn Festival. Travelers from all over the country and local residents gather here, to take photos, get selfies and make records. The children are hiding and playing inside, seems to be more attracted to the name of the installation, giggling that they may not walk out the matrix.
Aligned holes draw the shifting eye views to the clock and treasure boxes attaching to the vertical walls, indicating paths to explore.
